United Nations Calls on the U.S. to “Expedite Process” for Puerto Rico

The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization approved a resolution on Monday calling on the United States to “expedite a process that would allow Puerto Ricans to fully exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.”

More than 30 petitioners expressed dismay over the current territorial status of Puerto Rico, pointing out a number of concerns:

  • Puerto Ricans, though citizens of the United states, cannot vote in presidential elections.
  • Puerto Rico is represented in the U.S. Congress only by a non-voting representative.
  • The United States has control, according to petitioners, over Puerto Rico’s economy and laws.
  • Puerto Rico doesn’t have self determination; “The Commonwealth was just a lie,” reads an unattributed quote in the report of petitions.
  • Puerto Rican political prisoners are being held in U.S. prisons.

While petitioners argued for both statehood and independence, several said that the November plebiscite would not resolve the question.

This is the 13th consecutive year in which the Committee passed a resolution calling for self-determination for Puerto Rico.
